Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

Please be advised that our Annual Budget Meeting is Monday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. in the POA clubhouse.  The Board wants our members to be informed, engaged and heard. The purpose of the meeting is to inform our members about the 2020 budget. Hopefully we will have a full house at this meeting. Visit with us, ask questions and inform your neighbors!

The lawsuit filed by the “Town of Carolina Shores” continues and the proposed court date is scheduled for January 13, 2020. The Town owns two lots in our community and does not want to follow our Declaration of Restrictions. Our directors tried unsuccessfully in August to mediate the issues. Information was originally published in the November 2018 bulletin and noted in the board minutes the same month; updates have been included in the board minutes.  As is the case with all litigation, CSPOA board members must refrain from discussing too many details as this is an on-going case; however, we have no choice except to defend the CSPOA vigorously.

The Fall Social event held under the pavilion on Sunday, October 20, was a huge success with over 150 residents attending. It was a wonderful afternoon celebrating the beginning of a new season and having some relief from the summer heat with food and fellowship. A special thank you to the Social Committee for arranging and managing this event!

It’s fall y’all, and clocks are set back on Sunday, November 3.

THANK YOU TO OUR BULLETIN EDITORS LINDA RUGG and MERRILEE BURNS

IMPORTANT DATES:

November 13, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. – MONTHLY BOARD MEETING

ALL MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.

IF YOU ARE NOT ON OUR FREE COMMUNITY EMAIL DISTRIBUTION LIST, PLEASE CONTACT THE BUSINESS OFFICE. YOU MAY HAVE MORE THAN ONE EMAIL ADDRESS PER HOUSEHOLD.

Communications – Kelly Wilson

The Carolina Shores monthly bulletin is sent out each month to all members as well as any blast informational emails during the month. While most do receive the emails, a few do not and mention that they didn’t get the information. We suggest that if any member is not receiving these to please check the spam or junk mailbox on your email as these files may be getting forward to these folders.

Clubhouse – Kelly Wilson

As summer at the pool ends, we welcome seeing more use of the Carolina Shores clubhouse. Morning exercise, chair aerobics are in full swing along with Maj Jongg clubs and card players. As always, we welcome all members to join and enjoy.

The POA library is open during the hours between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., which are the access hours of the POA clubhouse, and operates on the honor system. They are presently looking for a few volunteers that may be interested in helping with shelving the books and keeping the library orderly. The library would like to receive more books, but if donating books or puzzles, please read the guidelines before doing so.

The clubhouse also houses tables and chairs that are available to members to sign out and use for different occasions. Families expecting extra guests for the holidays and need the extra table or seating are welcome to sign out either.

We remind everyone using the clubhouse kitchen to please put all items back when finished, do not leave any food on the counter or in the refrigerator and if you hold a function of any kind, you are responsible for emptying all trash cans used into plastic bags (no loose garbage) and remove them from the clubhouse.

Pool Kelly Wilson

The Carolina Shores swimming pool is now closed to swimming for the winter months. Tables and lounge chairs are still available for anyone who would like to sit and relax, read or lay out while the weather is warm. We will be locking down everything on November 10 until the spring. As the season came to a close, we are already getting ready and planning for next year. With the push from our President, Joe Watts, the lights around the pool area were changed out to the decorative lights and look great. We hope everyone visiting the pool this year had an enjoyable time and look forward to reopening in the spring.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

This month we would like to address the installation of emergency generators on home sites. These must meet all sideline and rear setbacks and be placed as to not encroach on the setbacks. Also, the unit must be screened so it is not visible from any roadway (same as your A/C heat pump unit). The screen must comply with the guidelines that apply to the A/C units.

You must receive approval from the ACC before doing that work. The ACC will respond ASAP within a reasonable period. This might not meet the contractors schedule, but you must wait for ACC approval regardless. Remember that the committee is staffed with volunteers and requires that at least two (2) members be present at all inspections and requests for permits. We schedule Tuesday and Thursday mornings for this to be done. Please plan you requests accordingly as we are not on duty every day.

You can call the office between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon with any questions you may have as to whether you require ACC approval, and we will advise you.

IMPORTANT!

Please make a note on your calendar as to when to do this. You can renew your ad by email (cspoabulletin@gmail.com), mail, phone or in person. CAROLINA SHORES POA HOLIDAY PARTY 2019 Mary Ann Williams

This year the POA Holiday Party will be held at the Elks Lodge, 2679 Carter Drive, in Calabash. Due to the occupancy capacity of the Elks, two separate parties will be held – Friday, December 6, and Sunday, December 8. The time for each party is from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5:00 p.m. Seating is limited to 130 persons for each date. The cost is $10.00 per person for residents. Guest tickets are $20.00 and are limited to one per household with at least one resident attending.

Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Each resident must come in person to pick up their own ticket or tickets for their household or guest.

In order to accommodate our numbers, tables will be set for parties of 8.

Tickets will be available Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, starting Monday, November 4, through Friday, November 22, or until the maximum number of tickets are sold. An additional Saturday, November 9, is being added to accommodate those who may not be able to pick up their tickets during the week. Ticket sales will take place in the POA clubhouse at a table manned by recreation committee members. No tickets will be distributed from the POA office.

Elks Lodge policy requires that the first and last names of each person attending must be provided to the club prior to the event. Therefore, each individual purchasing tickets, either for themselves or their household, will be asked to provide first and last names of attendees. If bringing a guest, that guest’s first and last name must also be provided.

Since this will be a sit-down, plated dinner, there are three (3) choices of entrees:

- Prime Rib with baked potato and vegetable

- Chicken Francese with baked potato and vegetable

- Grilled Salmon with rice and vegetable

(All dinners include salad and rolls and homemade cookies for dessert.)

Cash bar beginning at 4:00 p.m. with music by DJ Jay Kinlaw, who has entertained us at our Memorial Day and Labor Day picnics.

In summary, when coming to purchase your tickets for yourself or your household, please be prepared to provide payment along with the following:

- Evening you wish to attend

- Food selection you desire

- First and last names of each attendee and/or guest

Please keep in mind that NO EXCHANGES WILL BE POSSIBLE AFTER TICKETS ARE ISSUED.

Thank you.

Low Impact Chair Aerobics Mary Timothy

It is that time again for chair aerobics. Class will start October 14 at 9:00 a.m. We will have class every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Yes, five days a week. The class is for everyone and there is no charge. You will need one-pound weights for beginners. Advanced students use your own judgment on weights.

Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall

Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group? We meet every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the POA Board room off the kitchen. If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us. We’d love to see new faces.

The group meets and shares patterns and expertise. We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc. Usually we even have dessert!

Our meetings in November will be on the 11th and 25th at 6.30 p.m.

If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.

Garden Club Carol Filkins

We had an interesting October meeting with our guest speaker, Master Gardener Jeanne Pavero, talking about Bulbs and Rhizomes. Later there was a social hour with wonderful refreshments and camaraderie.

You don’t have to be an avid gardener to be part of the garden club. We have members with different interests and reasons why they have joined this wonderful club, one of which is the social aspect. Also, occasionally, there an interesting tidbit to be had. An example being that a few years ago there was a speaker on snakes. It was learned by some that if the head of the snake is a triangle, then it is poisonous. If not a triangle, then it is not poisonous. A great fact to know.

Next month at our November 13 meeting held at the POA clubhouse at 1:00 p.m., our guest speaker will be Master Gardener Judy Thuer who will talk about pruning. This is the time of year when we start to consider which bushes, trees, etc. to prune.

Don’t forget that November is our annual Soup ‘n’ Bake sale. This year it will be held on the 23rd from  11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.at the POA clubhouse. In past years, we have had many delicious soups and bakery products donated by great cooks and bakers, some from even non-members. If you can donate a crockpot of soup or a bakery product, please call Linda at 910-575-0634 for soup or Karen Berg at 724-914-8265 for bakery goods.

Our Holiday Luncheon will be at the Parson’s table in Little River on December 11 this year. We have enjoyed several luncheons there in the past. Tickets will be on sale at our November meeting for $21.50.

Looking forward to seeing members and non-members at our next meeting.

Carolina Shores Quilting GuildGloria Gustavson

MCj02911050000[1]Beautiful quilts are in the making as we embarked on the ‘Stack and Whack” method of Quilting. In the month of November, we will be focusing on making Table Runners. All quilters are welcome to join us on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of each month at the POA clubhouse at 10:00 a.m.

Also, on November 8 at 9:00 a.m. in the POA parking lot, the Quilting Guild has arranged to have Mr. Bertram, the Scissor Sharpener, available to ALL Carolina Shore residents. He will be here from 9:00 a.m. until….  If you need knives, scissors or garden tools sharpened, the opportunity will be here.

New Horizons Carla Urban

MCj04398570000[1]The New Horizons Singles Group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m. in the POA clubhouse. Any single resident of Carolina Shores is welcome to come and join us. If transportation is an issue, please feel free to contact me at 575-2339 and it will be arranged for you.

At our October meeting we discussed having a set topic for our future meetings and to that end the topic for the meeting for the 12th of November will be WATER. We are fortunate to have a new member of our community, Mr. Joe Juskis, to come and inform us on the issues surrounding water treatment and what we need to do better in handling this precious resource. I think that we can all agree that we have taken this precious resource for granted far too long. I know that he will give us useful information on this topic.

Thanks to Pat Ferstler for arranging for the group to have our Christmas Dinner at the Parsons Table. It will be held on the 12th of December, which is on a Thursday instead of the usual Tuesday.

Hope to see many of you there at the November 12 meeting where we each bring a dish to share and our own beverage.

Book Discussion Group – Susie Riggs

stack of books isolated on white backgroundThe Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group started our new reading year on a high note as we discussed the first of our recently compiled list of books that we plan to read for the next twelve months. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens has been on the top of the best-seller list for the last year and our members felt that this beautifully written story of a young girl’s coming of age in the marshlands of eastern North Carolina deserves the accolades that it has received. It is a story of survival, romance and mystery set amid a stunning landscape of the deep swamps.

We have many other exciting titles to look forward to in the coming months:
November       The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis
December        Girl Sleuth: Nancy Drew and the Women Who Created Her by Melanie Rehak
January            The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradel
February          The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
March              The Book of Dreams by Nina George
April                The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See
May                 Where the Wind Leads by Vinh Chung
June                 The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead
July                  The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
August            Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford’s Forgotten Jungle City by Greg Grandin
September       The Long Haul: A Trucker’s Tales of Life on the Road by Finn Murphy

All residents of Carolina Shores are invited to join our group. We meet at 10:00 a.m. on the third Friday of every month in the POA library. Our next meeting will be held on Friday, November 15. We will be discussing The Masterpiece by Fiona Davis.

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
